Can drinking water lower your creatinine levels?

Creatinine is a waste product that is the result of muscle metabolism in every human. This creatinine is generally present in the bloodstream and requires elimination through urine. According to the doctors and researchers the level of creatinine depends upon the gender, race, age, and body size of the human. Kidneys, the two bean-shaped organs in the human body take the complete responsibility of maintaining a normal range of creatinine in the human blood.

Creatinine is known to show the fair functioning of the kidneys. If the level of creatinine increases in the blood it depicts that kidneys are no longer treating it nicely and hence the malfunctioning or low filtering capacity of kidneys comes into notice. Kidneys can become impaired for any reason but this directly affects the creatinine level as it is getting cleared the least.

The normal level of creatinine differs in males and females. The normal range of creatinine in males lies between 0.6 mg/dL to 1.2 mg/dL. On the contrary the normal range of creatinine in females lies between 0.5 to 1.1mg/dL. This level is clearly low in females as they have fewer muscles in comparison to that of males.

High blood pressure and diabetes are the two main reasons that elevate the level of creatinine in the human body whereas some secondary reasons for this elevation of creatinine in the blood are over consumption of drugs such as cimetidine, indigestion of dietary meat, creatine supplements, strenuous exercise, and low flow of blood, kidney infections, and dehydration.

Balancing creatinine

When the creatinine elevates then there are some measures with which this elevated level of creatinine can be reduced. Primary measures of bringing this level of creatinine down without any medicines and the artificial medical process are making certain dietary changes. These changes play a very significant role in maintaining a good balance of creatinine in the blood. These changes are as follows:

  • The first and best a person could do is to reduce the amount of protein in the food he eats. Protein is present in meats or any specific kind of meat like red meat. These meats are the muscle tissues and like humans they also contain creatine which gets converted to creatinine when heated. So cutting down on meat protein would help in creatinine alleviation.
  • Increasing the amount of dietary fiber is also a great measure to alleviate creatinine in the blood.
  • Dehydration will increase creatinine whereas making the body hydrated will reverse the condition.

Apart from these dietary changes there can be other lifestyle changes like cutting down on vigorous exercises and doing light running and light exercises instead will help the body to alleviate the creatinine level.

Water and creatinine

When it comes to the alleviation process of creatinine, water plays a very significant role. When the body becomes dehydrated, the level of creatinine rises. Excess of dehydration also triggers the heart and causes many cardiovascular issues. So, in order to prevent this life-threatening condition of dehydration, drinking water is the most appropriate solution. Drinking water can efficiently bring the creatinine level down. Kidneys require water for better performance and dehydration induces pressure on the kidneys due to which they cannot clear creatinine. But when we drink enough water it provides fuel to the kidneys to make creatinine their way out of the body. Moreover, excess consumption of fluid or water can cause some damage to certain kidney patients. Therefore, it is important to consult with the doctor about the right amount of water and fluid consumption.

So, we can say that consumption of water helps in elevated creatinine reduction in the human body unless it is not harming your kidneys in any other contradictory manner.
